A Traditional Fijian Wedding Ceremony

The bride and groom may choose to dress in traditional Fijian wedding attire, specially prepared by the Turtle Island staff. Guests and the happy couple are adorned with garlands of fresh, fragrant flowers, filling the ceremony with color and tropical fragrance.

The ceremony begins with the trumpeting of conch shells, announcing the bride’s arrival on a traditional wedding raft known as a “billi billi.”

Ceremonial drums echo across the lagoon as the bride disembarks and is escorted to her groom by two Fijian attendants. As they approach the chapel, the moment is beautifully accompanied by a Fijian choir welcoming the couple.

Celebrating After the Ceremony

Following the ceremony, everyone gathers for a Kava Ceremony, an ancient Fijian tradition held in honor of the newlyweds.

The bride and groom are then carried back onto the billi billi for their return to the wedding celebration. Guests and staff raise their glasses in a joyful champagne toast before continuing the festivities with a traditional island feast and celebration.

Planning Your Wedding

To ensure everything proceeds smoothly, couples should plan to:

• Arrive in Nadi on a weekday
• Arrive at least three days before the wedding ceremony
• Allow time to obtain the marriage license
• Meet the staff and finalize ceremony details, attire, and feast arrangements
